Can brain proteins help older adults stay independent?
Researchers have identified specific proteins in the brain that may help older adults maintain their independence and resilience against disabilities. In a study involving 850 individuals who passed away at an average age of 89, scientists looked at proteins in the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, a region linked to cognitive functions. They found that certain proteins were associated with better mobility and daily living activities, even after accounting for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related pathologies.
This discovery is significant for anyone concerned about aging well. The identified proteins could play a role in preserving muscle strength and daily functioning, which are crucial for maintaining independence as you age. The study highlights 12 proteins linked to mobility, 215 related to instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), and 291 associated with basic daily activities (ADLs).
