Celebrating Nurses: Why They Matter to Our Health
Nurses are taking center stage during National Nurses Week, which runs from May 6-12, 2026. The American Nurses Enterprise (ANE) is celebrating the dedication and impact of nurses worldwide as part of its initiative, “The Power of Nurses™.” This year marks the 130th anniversary of the American Nurses Association (ANA), and events will highlight the essential role nurses play in improving healthcare outcomes for individuals and communities.
Throughout the week, ANE will host celebrations at major healthcare institutions across the United States, including well-known facilities like MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. A notable campaign, “Nurses Light Up the Sky,” will illuminate over 200 landmarks and city skylines in red to honor nurses. Iconic sites such as One World Trade Center in New York and Niagara Falls will join in this tribute, encouraging the public to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #NursesLightUpTheSky.
The celebration also invites the public to recognize their favorite nurses by posting photos on social media with the hashtag #ThankANurse or by donating to the American Nurses Foundation. This initiative not only honors the hard work of nurses but also aims to foster a greater appreciation for their contributions to healthcare. As the ANA continues to advocate for nursing excellence, this week serves as a reminder of the vital role nurses play in our health and well-being.
