Researchers found that experiencing famine during early life may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) later in life, especially for those with unhealthy metabolic conditions. This study examined over 15,000 middle-aged and older adults in China, revealing that the severity of famine exposure and adult dietary habits, particularly meat consumption, play significant roles in CKD risk.

Those who faced severe famine as children and later consumed a high-meat diet were found to be more than twice as likely to develop CKD. Additionally, individuals with a stable high waist circumference trajectory, which indicates obesity, showed a 75% increased risk of developing CKD if they had also experienced severe famine.

The evidence comes from two large national studies in China, making the findings robust but still preliminary. The research used various statistical models to analyze data from the China National Health Survey (CNHS) and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). While the results are compelling, they suggest a need for further investigation into how early life conditions and adult lifestyle choices interact to influence kidney health.
