How AI Could Change Lung Cancer Screening for You
Researchers found that a new AI-powered software, eyonis® LCS, can significantly enhance lung cancer screening by detecting suspicious nodules and assessing their likelihood of malignancy. This innovative tool, developed by Eyonis Inc. in partnership with Olea Medical and Canon Medical Systems, is the first of its kind to combine detection and diagnostic assessment in one workflow. With FDA clearance already received, eyonis LCS aims to improve the accuracy of lung cancer screenings across the U.S. and Europe.
This technology is particularly important for people at risk of lung cancer, as early detection can dramatically improve survival rates. Currently, only 16% of lung cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, leading to a five-year survival rate of just 18.6%. However, patients diagnosed early can have an 80% survival rate over 20 years. The eyonis LCS software has shown impressive results in clinical studies, with radiologists achieving a sensitivity of 93.3% and a specificity of 92.4% when using the tool, compared to much lower rates without it. This means fewer false positives and negatives, which can reduce unnecessary anxiety and invasive procedures.
The research is based on a large clinical study that demonstrated the software’s effectiveness in improving diagnostic performance among radiologists. While the technology is now available, it is essential to note that it is still in the early stages of widespread implementation in healthcare settings.
