Researchers found that fine-particle air pollution, specifically PM2.5, may worsen rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms and increase the risk of painful flare-ups. A study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases indicates that prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to heightened disease activity in individuals already diagnosed with RA. This connection suggests that managing air quality could become an essential part of living well with RA, particularly for the estimated 0.5% to 1% of adults affected by this chronic autoimmune condition.
For people with RA, avoiding poor air quality could help reduce inflammation and pain. The study tracked 1,070 RA patients over four years, analyzing their exposure to various air pollutants and correlating these levels with their disease activity during outpatient visits. The findings revealed that higher concentrations of PM2.5 were significantly associated with increased flare risk, particularly after more than two weeks of exposure.
