Researchers have begun a clinical trial to test a new oral medication, ART27.13, for treating glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness affecting over 80 million people globally. The trial, known as the DREAM study, aims to evaluate how well this synthetic cannabinoid can lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This is significant because current treatments, primarily topical eye drops, often have limitations in effectiveness and patient compliance.

For individuals concerned about their eye health, particularly those at risk for glaucoma, this study could lead to a new, more convenient treatment option. If successful, ART27.13 may provide a way to manage IOP effectively without the side effects commonly associated with other cannabinoid treatments. The study is being led by Professor Augusto Azuara-Blanco, a recognized expert in glaucoma management, and is funded by Glaucoma UK and the HSC R&D Division.

The DREAM study is currently in its early stages, with the first patient recently enrolled. While initial results are expected by the end of 2026, the study is still in the Phase 2 clinical trial phase, meaning that while the potential benefits are promising, more research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety in humans.
