Researchers found that providing hospital-level care at home, known as Hospital at Home (HaH), can be a better option for older adults living in care homes compared to traditional hospital stays. This approach aims to shift care from busy hospitals to more comfortable and familiar environments, which is especially important as the population ages and faces increasing health challenges. Interviews and surveys with care home staff in South England revealed that while some residents still need hospital admission for serious conditions, many benefit from the continuity and comfort that HaH offers.

This shift in care delivery matters for older adults and their families. It means less distress and a lower risk of complications often associated with hospital stays, such as confusion or physical decline. Care home staff noted that HaH allows for better collaboration among caregivers, preserves residents’ dignity, and helps maintain their quality of life. However, the research also highlighted significant barriers, including limited workforce capacity and inconsistent access to HaH services, which can delay care when it’s needed most.

The study, which included feedback from 50 survey participants and interviews with 20 staff members, shows that while HaH is a promising alternative, it is still in the early stages of implementation in care homes. Addressing the structural challenges will be crucial for making HaH a standard option for older adults. Future research should focus on how to improve access and streamline the use of HaH services in these settings, ensuring that more people can benefit from this approach.
