Researchers have uncovered new evidence that challenges long-held beliefs about the transmission of treponemal diseases, such as syphilis, from mother to child. A study led by Dr. Melandri Vlok from Charles Sturt University examined ancient skeletal remains from Vietnam, dating back 3,500 years, and found signs of congenital infections in children. This suggests that diseases like yaws, which is not sexually transmitted, may have been passed down through generations, complicating our understanding of syphilis’s origins and how it has been identified in ancient populations.
