Could a brain rhythm improve Parkinson's treatment?
Researchers have discovered a specific brain rhythm that could enhance treatments for Parkinson’s disease. This breakthrough, led by a team from the University of Cologne and other institutions, reveals that the effectiveness of deep brain stimulation (DBS) relies on targeting a particular brain network that communicates through a fast electrical rhythm known as the beta rhythm, operating at 20 to 35 Hz. This finding could lead to more personalized and effective treatment settings for individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
For people living with Parkinson’s, this discovery is significant. DBS is already used to alleviate movement issues associated with the condition, but the new insights could help tailor the therapy to individual needs, potentially improving motor function and quality of life. The research involved a substantial group of 50 patients, demonstrating a clear connection between the strength of the targeted brain network and the degree of improvement in motor symptoms following DBS treatment.
