Is Rising CO2 in Our Air Changing Our Blood Chemistry?
Researchers found that rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere may be affecting human blood chemistry. A study analyzing over two decades of U.S. health data revealed that blood bicarbonate levels have increased by about 7% since 1999, while levels of calcium and phosphorus have decreased. These changes in blood chemistry closely track the rise in atmospheric CO2, which has climbed from approximately 369 parts per million (ppm) in 2000 to over 420 ppm today.

Instead, they suggest a gradual physiological change that warrants attention as part of climate change discussions. The researchers advocate for monitoring both atmospheric CO2 levels and biological markers to understand how these environmental changes may impact human health over time. As CO2 emissions reduction remains critical for limiting global warming, these findings highlight the need to consider potential health impacts in climate policy discussions.
